Many people want to be more productive at work. If you’re one of them, keep reading for several strategies that will help you boost your productivity.
Stop Multitasking
It’s very common for people to turn to multitask as they try to get more done in a day, but this practice can actually harm productivity. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, the human brain is not good at switching tasks on the fly. Trying to do so can make you less productive in the long run. To cut down on multitasking, try setting a timer and focusing on a single task until that timer goes off.
Cut Down on Meetings
Meetings can be a productivity killer. This is especially true for meetings that have the sole purpose of sharing information: There is no need to gather everyone in the same room for an update that could be communicated over email. If you’re considering scheduling a meeting, ask yourself: Could I accomplish this meeting’s goal by sending an email instead? If so, send that email and save your time for more productive tasks.
Stop Notifications
Every time a notification from your phone or a social media website goes off, there is a chance it will drag your attention away from whatever important task you’re doing. Try disabling notifications during your working hours. If you’re worried you’ll miss something, set aside certain times of the day during which you’ll check your phone and social media—and only check during those times.
Make Time for Breaks
Paradoxically, taking breaks from work can boost your productivity. Breaks are a way to fight off mental fatigue and come back to your task more alert and rested. These breaks can be as short as 30 seconds or as long as an hour for a leisurely lunch. And when your workday is over, make sure it is actually over: Try to avoid taking work home with you so that you can get the rest and mental break you need.
